“They say Israel is here to protect Jews, and that’s not true,” she said. “It’s here to protect a system of occupation. When Jews push back against the system they are no longer protected. If this were a Palestinian protest, I’m sure the injuries would be worse than a broken arm.” As Brammer-Shlay put it, “I’m going to rabbinical school. I’m very proud to be Jewish and I’m devoted to the Jewish community. And I also know that the occupation is not Judaism …. But today I think the biggest crisis facing the American Jewish community is our support for the occupation.”
My detractors must be aghast, especially my two pet Hasbara trolls, who follow me around the Internet and harass me; “Proud Zionist” and Eric Hammer. The latter being the Hasbara troll with the US/Israeli flag who calls everyone including Jews he meets, Achmed; if they do not agree with Apartheid in Israel and indeed how Israel itself was founded. They must be beside themselves with recent reporting.
Sarah Brammer-Shlay is a fine example of an American Jew making a difference with compassion, respect for human rights, and by protesting non-violently she clearly demonstrated great respect for the rule of law as well.
Over the decades I have tried to explain to people what was coming, most of it has come to pass and is still coming down the pike as this article from Haaretz and from the words of this brave young woman with good values, Sarah Brammer-Shlay. Illegal occupation, ethnic cleansing, state terrorism, Apartheid, that’s all antithetical to ethical and wholesome Judaism. Isn’t it?
