BBSNews 2015-01-17 — By Michael Hess. Hamas has claimed to be ready to hand over “thousands of reports and documents” as evidence to the International Criminal Court on Saturday. According to Haaretz:
Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip, said on Saturday the Islamist group appreciated the move.
“What is needed now is to quickly take practical steps in this direction and we are ready to provide (the court) with thousands of reports and documents that confirm the Zionist enemy has committed horrible crimes against Gaza and against our people,” he said in a statement.
According to Ma’an the Palestinian Foreign Ministry in Ramallah also welcomed the move saying in a news report:
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday said it welcomed the decision to open an initial probe on Israeli war crimes at the International Criminal Court.
The ministry said in a statement that the ICC decision was a positive and important step towards achieving justice and guaranteeing respect of international law.
Palestine will fully cooperate with the ICC and facilitate its mission until justice is achieved, the statement said.
On Friday the International Criminal Court determined to open a preliminary investigation into War Crimes allegedly committed by both Palestine and Israel during the summer war where thousands of Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed by Israeli occupation forces. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took time off from the upcoming election to say that the investigation was “absurd”.
